Taxonomic definition The thyroglossal duct is a vestigial embryonic structure [vestigium] which is a remaining from the embryo which normally disappears at birth.
Encyclopedic definition a duct in the embryo extending between the thyroid primordium and the posterior part of the tongue, which opens as the foramen caecum; the distal part usually differentiates to form the pyramidal lobe the thyroid and the remainder becomes obliterated, but occasionally persists into adult life, giving rise to cysts, fistulas, or sinuses.
